Mooncake Day

La historia

Mooncakes are dense, patterned pastry rounds filled with lotus seed paste, sweet bean, nuts, or savory mixes, often hiding a salted egg yolk that suggests a full moon when cut. The soft skin is molded with floral or character designs; slices are rich, so pieces are shared around the table with tea. Gift boxes travel between families each autumn, but the cake itself remains a baker's craft of filling, skin, and bake.

Tied culturally to Mid-Autumn gatherings, mooncakes are still, at heart, pastry rather than pageantry. Cantonese styles dominate global recognition; other regions offer flaky, snow-skin, or savory versions that locals defend fiercely. Modern flavors multiply in city bakeries, yet classic lotus-and-yolk remains the reference point for many childhood memories and tasting standards.

On Mooncake Day, cut a traditional cake into wedges and taste paste, yolk, and skin together with hot tea. Share the pieces—richness asks for company. Celebrate mooncakes as China's autumn pastry icon: patterned, generous, and meant to be divided.
