Roti, or chapati, is the everyday whole-wheat flatbread rolled thin and cooked on a tawa until it puffs with steam. Soft, flexible, and made without yeast, it is the daily bread of countless North Indian and broader Indian tables—used to scoop dal, sabzi, and curry without needing cutlery. A light smear of ghee is optional luxury after it comes off the heat and lands in the cloth-lined basket.

Skill shows in dough softness, even rolling, and heat control so the bread browns in spots without drying out or staying raw in the center. Unlike restaurant naan, roti is home food first: morning, lunch, and dinner across ordinary weeks. Regional flours and stuffed paratha cousins expand the flatbread family, but plain roti remains the essential round that feeds workdays and quiet evenings alike.

On Roti Day, knead a soft dough, roll evenly, and cook until each disc balloons. Stack under a cloth to keep warm. Soft dough and a hot tawa matter more than fancy tools.
