Shakshuka is one of Israel's most beloved breakfast plates: eggs gently poached in a simmering sauce of tomatoes, sweet peppers, onion, and warm spices until the whites set and the yolks stay soft. Cumin, paprika, and garlic build depth; cilantro or parsley finish the skillet at the last moment. Served straight from the pan with thick pita for scooping, it is as much a weekend ritual as a weekday comfort, filling the kitchen with the smell of reduced tomatoes.

North African and Levantine kitchens share versions of eggs in sauce, and Israeli home cooks and cafés made the dish a national morning signature. Markets supply ripe tomatoes year-round; restaurants compete with spicy zhug on the side, crumbled cheese on top, or a side of Israeli salad for crunch.
