Tangyuan are soft glutinous rice balls served in sweet broth, a dessert and snack whose chew is as important as its filling. The dough of sticky rice flour is rolled smooth, stuffed with black sesame, peanut, red bean, or left plain, then poached until the balls float. In a warm ginger-scented soup or a light syrup, they become glossy orbs that taste of celebration without needing a formal banquet spread.

The food is closely tied to lantern-season tables and family reunions, where round shapes suggest togetherness and completion. Yet tangyuan also appear in dessert shops and home kitchens whenever a soft, warm sweet is wanted. Regional cousins include yuanxiao with a different rolling method in the north; fillings and broths shift by household preference. Texture is the star—springy, sticky, never dry or chalky in the center.

On Tangyuan Day, cook a small pot of sesame-filled balls and serve them steaming in ginger soup. Share the bowl while the centers are still molten and fragrant. Celebrate tangyuan as China's gentle dessert of gathering: round, sweet, and made to be eaten together.
