Bûche Day

The bûche de Noël is a rolled sponge cake filled and frosted to resemble a Yule log, often chocolate, sometimes chestnut or coffee, decorated with bark-like ridges, meringue mushrooms, and powdered sugar snow. It is France's great December pâtisserie centerpiece—seasonal bakery craft rather than a civic holiday—sold in every serious shop from early December onward. Slices reveal spiral layers; the table reveals a forest of edible ornament.

The cake adapted older Yule-log customs into pastry form in the nineteenth century and became inseparable from French end-of-year desserts. Modern bûches range from classic buttercream to refined entremets shaped like logs. Home bakers roll genoise with care; professionals compete with spectacular finishes. Either path treats the bûche as edible sculpture meant for sharing.

On Bûche Day, buy from a pâtisserie or roll a home sponge with chocolate cream. Slice thickly and serve with coffee. Celebrating the bûche is celebrating French seasonal pastry: sponge, cream, and a log that ends the year on a sweet note.
