National Cheese Day
The history of cheese, a tale predating recorded history, traces back to around 8000 BCE, shortly after humans domesticated animals. Nomadic tribes stumbled upon cheese-making accidentally, storing milk in animal stomach containers that curdled the milk, creating cheese curds and initiating the journey of this beloved food. Today, there are over a thousand cheese varieties globally, each offering unique tastes and textures. From Brie's velvety creaminess to Cheddar's sharp tang, Mozzarella's soft embrace to Feta's crumbly charm, cheese caters to diverse palates. Its versatility shines as it pairs splendidly with fruits, nuts, cured meats, and crusty bread. Legendary wine and cheese pairings further elevate the experience. Certain cheeses have gained global fame, such as Parmigiano-Reggiano (Parmesan) with its nutty richness and Gouda from the Netherlands, known for its creamy sweetness. In 2013, the world's oldest cheese was discovered in a Chinese mummy's tomb, resembling modern-day blue cheese, showcasing cheese's enduring nature. Beyond its culinary role, cheese is embedded in popular culture, from the iconic ”Say cheese!“ in photographs to cinematic expressions like ”Ratatouille.“ Cheese festivals worldwide offer enthusiasts opportunities to taste various types, witness demonstrations, and partake in cheese-centric activities.
