International Cheese Day

The story

International Cheese Day, celebrated on June 4, is a joyful nod to one of cooking’s great transformations: fresh milk turned, by culture, rennet, salt, and time, into something sliceable, meltable, crumbly, or luxuriously soft. From sharp cheddar to creamy brie, salty feta to pungent blue, cheese is pantry staple and celebration board alike.

Cheesemaking is ancient. Early herding peoples learned that fermented milk lasted longer and traveled better; Romans recorded techniques; monasteries refined recipes; and villages from the Alps to the Andes developed styles shaped by climate, animals, and local taste. Cow, goat, sheep, and buffalo milks each bring distinct character. Today France, Italy, Switzerland, the Netherlands, the United States, and many other countries boast proud cheese traditions, while small creameries worldwide keep experimentation alive.

Cheese melts over pasta, crowns burgers, fills sandwiches, and anchors wine nights with fruit and bread. It can be everyday grated Parmesan or a rare alpine wheel shared among friends. Lactose-conscious and plant-based alternatives have widened the table further, but the classic craft remains a marvel of microbiology and patience.

On International Cheese Day, people build a tasting board, cook a gratin or grilled cheese, visit a creamery, or learn the story behind a favorite wedge. It is a day for richness, curiosity, and the simple pleasure of something wonderfully aged.
