Paneer Tikka Day
April 16 every year
The story
Paneer tikka is cubed Indian fresh cheese marinated in yogurt and spices, then grilled or roasted until the edges char and the centers stay soft. Peppers and onions often share the skewer. As a vegetarian tandoor classic, it carries the smoky restaurant aroma of North Indian grills without needing meat—bright color from Kashmiri chili, depth from garam masala, ginger-garlic, and kasuri methi.
Appetizer platters and starter menus made paneer tikka a global Indian restaurant staple and a party board favorite. Home cooks approximate the tandoor with ovens, air fryers, or heavy pans, finishing with lemon and chaat masala. The dish rewards bold marinade and high heat: pale, steamed-looking cubes miss the point. Leftovers tuck into wraps, but fresh off the skewer is best.
On Paneer Tikka Day, marinate generously for several hours, cook hot enough to blister, and serve with onion salad and mint chutney. Eat off the skewer while warm. Celebrate paneer tikka as India's vegetarian answer to the charcoal grill.
