National Bicarbonate of Soda Day

The story

Originating in ancient Egypt around 3000 B.C. as “Natron,” sodium bicarbonate has evolved into a vital household item.

National Bicarbonate of Soda Day celebrates its rich history and scientific prowess, evident in its compound formula NaHCO3. French chemist Nicolas Leblanc's 1791 production of “soda ash” marked a breakthrough, paving the way for baking soda's widespread use as a leavening agent, replacing the challenging reliance on yeast in baking. In 1846, baking soda emerged in its modern form, transforming culinary practices and cleaning routines.

Its unique chemical composition, reacting with acids and bases, not only elevated baked goods but also established it as a potent cleaning agent. Presently, the annual production of over two million tons underscores its enduring significance. This celebration prompts exploration of the compound's myriad applications, from baking and cleaning to silverware polishing.

As an alkaline substance, baking soda regulates body pH, offering relief for acid reflux and indigestion. Beyond practical uses, baking soda's history is intertwined with key moments, such as chemist Alfred Bird's 1843 creation of baking powder. Arm & Hammer's 1970 Earth Day sponsorship thrust baking soda into eco-friendly prominence, leading to its iconic yellow box's widespread household presence by 1927, endorsed by Good Housekeeping and McCall's.

National Bicarbonate of Soda Day invites us to appreciate the versatile journey of this compound that has made our lives fresher and cleaner.
