The story

Rum, a spirit with roots tracing back to the 1300s, originated as “wine sugar,” evolving into an early form resembling today's dark rums. The term “rum” gained prevalence in the West Indies by 1667, initially documented as “kill-devil” or “rumbullion” in 1650 Barbados records. The inception of rum intertwines with a grim historical episode: slaves traded for molasses, a key ingredient in rum production. The precise creator of rum remains unknown, emerging in the 1600s through the ingenuity of enslaved individuals in the Caribbean. They realized fermenting molasses produced alcohol, laying the groundwork for rum. Refinement through distillation led to recognizable rum iterations. Despite anonymous early pioneers, their legacy shaped a timeless spirit. Rum's legacy expanded across regions like Jamaica, Barbados, Demerara, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands, each contributing distinct styles. In the United States, craft distilleries have embraced rum production, emphasizing heritage and craftsmanship. Presently, rum production is a source of pride, with smaller distilleries focusing on quality.
