Zongzi Day

The story

Zongzi are sticky rice parcels wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves, filled with savory meats, beans, egg yolk, or sweet pastes, then steamed or boiled until the rice coheres into a fragrant pyramid or cushion. Untying the leaf releases a rush of herbal aroma; the rice holds the imprint of the wrap like edible origami. North–south tastes diverge—sweeter or meatier—but the leaf-and-rice form unites them.

The food is traditionally eaten around the Duanwu season, yet zongzi appear in shops and home freezers far beyond a single festival week. Wrapping is communal work: soaking leaves, packing rice, tying string with practiced hands. Fillings tell family preference as much as region. Texture should be cohesive and moist, never mushy or dry in the center of the parcel.
