Rioja Wine Day
September 14 every year
The story
Rioja wine is Spain’s most internationally recognized DOCa, known for elegant reds from Tempranillo and blended grapes aged with care in oak and bottle. Ruby to brick in color, Rioja can taste of red fruit, vanilla, leather, and spice depending on crianza level—joven, crianza, reserva, or gran reserva. It is the glass that turns a simple tapa into a ritual.
The Ebro valley vineyards and historic bodegas built a reputation for consistency and aging culture that travelers meet first when they explore Spanish wine. Harvest season in September ties the calendar to the land. Rioja pairs with lamb, mushrooms, cheese, and jamón without demanding ceremony, yet it rewards slow tasting. White and rosado styles broaden the story beyond the famous reds for every table.
On Rioja Wine Day, pour a crianza or reserva into a proper glass, let it open, and pair it with Manchego or a simple stew. Sip with attention rather than rush. Celebrating Rioja is celebrating Spain’s benchmark wine region in every glass.
