Champagne Day
October 12 every year
The story
Champagne is sparkling wine from the delimited Champagne region of northeastern France, made primarily from Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay by the traditional method of second fermentation in bottle. Fine bubbles, high acidity, and flavors from citrus to brioche make it the world's celebration wine—and everyday aperitif for those who live near the vineyards. Only sparkling wine from this region may bear the Champagne name under French and EU rules.
Growers and houses, from small récoltants to grand marques, share a culture of blending, aging on lees, and careful disgorgement. The landscape of chalk soils and cool climate shapes wines built for freshness. France frames Champagne as regional heritage, not merely a party prop; food pairings range from oysters and fries to soft cheese and dessert.
On Champagne Day, chill a bottle properly, open with control, and pour into flutes or tulip glasses. Toast with something salty or simply enjoy the mousse. Celebrating Champagne is celebrating French sparkling wine at its source: chalk, bubbles, and a name protected by place.
