Schnitzel in Pita Day
July 30 every year
The story
Schnitzel in pita is Israeli fast food comfort: a thin breaded chicken or turkey cutlet, fried crisp, stuffed into pita with hummus, shredded cabbage or salad, and pickles. The cutlet should overhang the bread; hummus or tahini keeps each bite moist as you walk. It is the after-school, beach-day, and late-shift sandwich of choice when nothing fancy will do.
European schnitzel met local pita culture and became something distinctly everyday Israeli—less formal plate, more portable meal you can eat on a bench. Stalls and home kitchens pound cutlets thin so they cook fast and stay tender under the crumbs. Seasoned breadcrumbs, sometimes with sesame, add crunch that survives the journey inside soft bread.
On Schnitzel in Pita Day, fry a golden cutlet, warm the pita, and load vegetables and sauce without shame or restraint. Eat with both hands. Celebrating schnitzel in pita is celebrating Israel's most straightforward street sandwich joy—crunchy, filling, and proudly unpretentious. Leftover cutlets remake beautifully the next day.
