Italian Espresso Day

The story

Italian espresso is a short, intense coffee extracted under pressure into a demitasse, crowned with a golden crema that signals freshness and skill. The shot is meant to be drunk quickly at the bar, standing among neighbors, as much a social pause as a caffeine hit. Beans are typically a blend roasted to bring sweetness and body rather than sharp acidity alone. Machines hiss, cups clink, and the whole ritual lasts only a minute—yet it structures Italian days from morning to afternoon.

Espresso culture prizes consistency: grind, dose, tamp, and timing must align for a balanced extraction. At home, a moka pot offers a related stovetop intensity, while a proper machine recreates the café shot. National Espresso Day invites Italians and fans abroad to honor that craft.

Visit a bar that pulls clean shots, notice the crema and the sweetness as the coffee cools slightly, or practice your own extraction. Pair it with a small glass of water, skip the sugar if the roast is good, and celebrate the tiny cup that fuels Italian life from Milan to Palermo.
