Guacamole Day
March 17 every year
The story
Guacamole is Mexico's iconic avocado mash: ripe fruit crushed with lime, onion, chile, cilantro, and often tomato until chunky and fragrant. The name echoes Nahuatl roots for avocado sauce, and the best versions taste green and alive rather than pasty. A molcajete still makes the classic texture, bruising aromatics into the flesh so every scoop carries heat and citrus.
Avocados domesticated in Mesoamerica became a global crop, yet guacamole remains culturally Mexican—party centerpiece, taquería side, and proof that a few ingredients can outshine complicated cooking. Salt is crucial; so is eating it soon after mixing, before the surface dulls. Tortilla chips are common companions abroad, while at home it often rides beside tacos, grilled meats, or simply a spoon.
On Guacamole Day, choose avocados that yield gently, mash by hand, and season boldly. Set the bowl out with warm tortillas or totopos and watch it disappear. Celebrate a Mexican appetizer that is humble, photogenic, and endlessly shared.
