National Chocolate Milkshake Day

The story

The term ”milkshake“ emerged in the late 19th century, initially describing an eggnog-like alcoholic beverage. However, the 1920s marked a pivotal moment for milkshakes with the advent of the electric blender and malted milk powder. Originally an alcoholic tonic, by 1900, pharmacies began offering a non-alcoholic ”wholesome drink“ in various flavors.

In 1911, Hamilton Beach's Cyclone Drink Mixers streamlined milkshake preparation, but the game-changer came in 1922 with Steven Poplawski's electric blender. The 1920s and 1930s saw milkshakes firmly establish themselves as beloved treats at malt shops nationwide, becoming iconic hangout spots. Malted milk powder, introduced in the 1870s, played a crucial role, adding a toasted caramel flavor and transforming regular milkshakes into malted chocolate delights.

Chocolate milkshakes, with their rich, creamy, and indulgent nature, transcended time, offering the perfect refreshment on a hot day, a smooth texture for easy sipping, and a satisfying weight on the tongue. The combination of the electric blender and malted milk powder in the 1920s revolutionized the milkshake, creating a timeless dessert that continues to captivate taste buds with its irresistible chocolatey goodness.
