National Deviled Egg Day

The story

National Deviled Egg Day, observed on November 2nd, celebrates the beloved bite-sized delicacy that has become a staple at parties, holidays, and family gatherings. The roots of deviled eggs can be traced back to ancient Rome, where they were served as a luxurious first course known as ”gustatio.“ Evolving over centuries, the dish survived the rise and fall of empires, adapting across Europe.

The term ”deviled“ emerged in 1786, denoting zesty and spicy foods, particularly eggs seasoned with mustard, pepper, or other flavorful ingredients. By the mid-1800s, ”deviled eggs“ made their way into American cookbooks, securing a permanent place in kitchens. Deviled eggs showcase the versatility of eggs, with hard-boiled eggs halved and their yolks mixed with ingredients like mayonnaise and mustard before being creatively reintegrated.

Variations abound, from traditional paprika garnish to adventurous additions like bacon, caviar, anchovies, or herring. As deviled eggs traversed time, regional adaptations emerged. Western Europe incorporates ingredients like tomato, parsley, cheese, capers, and anchovies, while Hungary includes mashed yolks with white bread soaked in milk.

Sweden adds a Nordic touch with sour cream, chives, onion, caviar, and pickled herring, exemplifying the global appeal and diverse evolution of this delectable dish.
