National Double Cheeseburger Day

The story

This iconic food item, consisting of two succulent patties and two gooey slices of cheese nestled between a soft bun, has become a staple across the United States. The journey of the cheeseburger began in the late 19th century when hamburgers gained popularity in the United States. However, it wasn't until the 1920s that the concept of adding cheese to the beef patty became widespread.

The exact origin of the cheeseburger is shrouded in mystery, with conflicting claims from various establishments. One popular story attributes the invention of the cheeseburger to Lionel Sternberger, a 16-year-old fry cook at The Rite Spot in Pasadena, California, in 1924. Sternberger decided to enhance a hamburger by adding a slice of cheese, giving birth to the delectable creation.

Other contenders for the title of cheeseburger inventor include O'Dell's in Los Angeles, Kaelin's Restaurant in Kentucky, Humpty Dumpty Drive-In in Colorado, and Steak 'n Shake in Illinois. The double cheeseburger took its own stride in 1937 and became a sensation when Bob's Big Boy is credited with introducing the first double cheeseburger, featuring an extra bun between the two patties Fast-food chains such as Burger King, McDonald's, Wendy's, and others embraced this concept, turning it into a comfort food enjoyed by many.
