National Hot Cocoa Day

The story

Around 2000 years ago, the Mayans crafted the first chocolate beverage using ground cocoa seeds, water, chili peppers, and cornmeal, creating a spicy concoction reserved for special occasions. In the 16th century, Spanish explorer Hernán Cortés introduced cocoa beans and the Mayan chocolate drink to Europe. In Spain, King Charles V and the upper class refined the beverage, transforming it into a hot, sweetened delight, removing chili beans and paving the way for the evolution of hot chocolate.

The 18th century marked the emergence of chocolate houses in London, with Hans Sloane's mixture of chocolate and milk laying the groundwork for modern hot chocolate. This pivotal moment fused chocolate with milk, becoming a precursor to the beloved beverage enjoyed globally today. By the 19th century, hot chocolate transitioned from a medicinal remedy to a purely pleasurable drink.

It crossed the Atlantic to the United States, shedding its medicinal image and becoming a beloved beverage. Over the centuries, hot chocolate has evolved into one of the most cherished drinks enjoyed by millions worldwide, showcasing its rich and diverse journey through different cultures and times.
