This tradition, born in snowy Rochester, New York in the 1960s, was the brainchild of Florence Rappaport, a mother of six looking to ward off cabin fever. As her youngest duo, Ruth (now Kristal) and Joe Rappaport, shivered and complained about the icy chill, Florence had a whimsical idea: “Let's have ice cream for breakfast!” The following year, her children eagerly reminded her, and the sweet tradition was born.

Over the years, this frosty festivity spread far and wide, thanks to Florence's globe-trotting grandchildren. Today, Ice Cream for Breakfast Day is celebrated from New York to Namibia, with festivities ranging from cozy family gatherings to lively parties. Even Cosmopolitan and local publications have sung its praises.
