National Monte Cristo Sandwich Day

The story

Celebrate National Monte Cristo Day on September 17 by indulging in the culinary delight of this mouthwatering sandwich. Originating from the French croque monsieur in the late 19th century, the classic version features ham and Gruyère nestled between slices of bread, seasoned with salt and pepper, and pan-fried or baked. The magic unfolds in the United States with the birth of the Monte Cristo, a variation involving dipping the sandwich in beaten egg or batter before frying, possibly influenced by American cookbooks in the 1930s.

Legend suggests the name was popularized by the Blue Bayou restaurant at Disneyland, possibly paying homage to The Count of Monte Cristo. Today, the Monte Cristo boasts diverse variations across the United States, from grilled renditions to open-faced delights. Its versatility extends to ingredients, with regional adaptations introducing sliced turkey or different cheeses.

Some enthusiasts even sprinkle powdered sugar on their Monte Cristo, pairing it with preserves or maple syrup for a sweet and savory fusion. Whether savoring the classic combination or exploring creative twists, National Monte Cristo Day invites food enthusiasts on a delectable journey through this iconic sandwich's rich history and diverse flavors.
