National Spicy Hermit Cookie Day

The story

National Spicy Hermit Cookie Day celebrates the rich history and warm flavors of the hermit cookie, a beloved treat with roots dating back to the late 19th century. Originating in Plattsburgh, New York, the hermit cookie gained fame through the Champlain Valley Book of Recipes in 1880. This soft and chewy delight is infused with autumn spices like cinnamon, cloves, allspice, and sometimes nutmeg.

The hermit cookie's name has various theories, with suggestions of its preservability for sailors and travelers, its resemblance to hermits' robes, or connections to the Moravians. These cookies were favored by middle-class mothers during the rise of domestic science, offering a wholesome and convenient sweet. Celebrating National Spicy Hermit Cookie Day involves savoring the unique blend of brown sugar, raisins, and spices in this adaptable treat.

The cookies are often cut into squares, showcasing their soft texture. Over time, hermit cookies have evolved, with variations in sugar types, the addition of eggs and molasses, and diverse choices in dried fruits. The hermit cookie has stood the test of time, becoming a cherished treat that evokes nostalgia and offers a delightful taste of autumn.

Whether enjoyed during the holidays or year-round, the hermit cookie's enduring popularity lies in its simplicity, adaptability, and the warm memories it brings to cookie enthusiasts.
