The story

World Soil Day, observed on December 5, invites us to celebrate the living ground beneath our feet—and the soil-grown food that depends on it. Healthy soil is not dirt alone; it is a complex community of minerals, organic matter, water, air, and countless organisms that turn sunlight and rain into harvests we can eat.

Civilizations have always understood, in practice if not in science, that fertile earth means survival. From early farming along river valleys to today’s orchards, vegetable plots, and grain fields, soil has been the quiet partner in every loaf, salad, and root vegetable stew.
