Grilled Fish Day
August 27 every year
The story
Grilled fish along Israel's Mediterranean coast means whole fish kissed by charcoal or a screaming-hot grill, finished with lemon, olive oil, garlic, and herbs. Skin crisps and blisters; flesh stays moist and flakes at the bone. Served with salad, tahini, or roasted vegetables, it is a seaside meal that needs little more than good fish and assertive seasoning.
Coastal markets and fish restaurants keep the ritual simple: choose the catch of the day, grill hot and fast, and flood the platter with citrus before it hits the table. The dish is Mediterranean by geography and Middle Eastern by table companions—pita, pickles, and herb salads nearby for scooping. Summer evenings and weekend lunches both claim it as the right answer.
On Grilled Fish Day, oil a whole fish well, grill until just opaque, and shower with lemon and parsley. Share the platter family-style. Celebrate coastal Israeli seafood at its cleanest and most generous—smoke, citrus, and the sea on one plate. Ask for the head and bones if you make stock later.
