Olive Oil Day
October 8 every year
The story
Olive oil is the liquid pantry of Israeli and Levantine cooking—extra virgin oil for dipping bread, dressing salads, filling hummus wells, and finishing grilled fish or vegetables. Fresh oil smells grassy, peppery, or fruity; older oil fades into flatness. Groves and boutique presses across the country bottle harvests that cooks drizzle without measuring, trusting the green-gold pour.
Mediterranean diet culture and Middle Eastern mezze both depend on good oil as much as on herbs and legumes. Bread and za'atar, labneh swirls, and roasted eggplant all wait for it. Harvest in autumn brings pungent new oil that locals chase while it still bites the throat—a seasonal pleasure as real as any fruit.
On Olive Oil Day, pour a small dish of excellent oil, dip warm pita, and taste it alone before you cook with it. Celebrate the Mediterranean-Middle Eastern staple that makes Israeli food shine with almost no effort beyond a good bottle. Store bottles away from heat and bright light. New oil season is worth seeking out at markets.
