Masala Chai Day
May 21 every year
The story
Masala chai is milky tea simmered with ginger, cardamom, and other spices until the kitchen smells like welcome. Street vendors pull it into clay kulhads; homes brew pots for breakfast and guests. Strong black tea, milk, sugar, and spice ratios vary by region and mood, but the ritual is shared: boil, strain, pour, pause. A good cup tastes peppery-sweet, aromatic, and deeply comforting without tasting of dusty spice jars.
India is one of the world's great tea cultures, from Assam and Darjeeling gardens to countless roadside stalls that fuel offices, stations, and late shifts. International Tea Day on May 21 recognizes tea's global role; marking Masala Chai Day on the same date centers India's spiced milk-tea practice rather than a civic wrapper. Chai is work break, hospitality, and daily rhythm in one pour—sometimes half-sweet, sometimes cutting with extra ginger when a cold threatens.
On Masala Chai Day, crush fresh ginger and cardamom, simmer tea with milk, and pour into cups that warm the hands. Share a pot. Celebrate masala chai as India's most companionable brew.
