National Strawberries and Cream Day
Wild strawberries have been enjoyed for thousands of years, going back to Ancient Roman times. Back then, people associated them with Venus, the goddess of love, and also used them for their health benefits. The strawberries we grow in gardens today were first developed in France during the 1750s. They were created by breeding two different kinds of strawberries from different parts of the world. The tradition of eating strawberries with cream has been around for centuries. It's believed that Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, who worked closely with the English king in the 1500s, might have introduced this pairing at a lavish event. Since then, it became a popular tradition, especially at events like tennis matches. Strawberries have a short season when they're ripe and sweet, usually in May. That's why National Strawberries and Cream Day falls at this time, to celebrate them when they're at their best!
