National Gummi Worm Day

The story

The history of gummy candies can be traced back to their German origins, where they were first known as “gummi” candies. In 1922, Hans Riegel, the founder of Haribo, a German confectionery company, introduced the world to the iconic gummi bears, which quickly became a sensation and a staple in the confectionery world. The tale of gummy worms took a different turn when the German company Trolli introduced these colorful, worm-shaped treats in 1981, believed to mark National Gummy Worm Day on July 15.

The creation of gummy worms aimed to delight children and entice parents with an element of surprise. Over time, gummy worms carved their niche in the candy world, challenging the supremacy of the ubiquitous gummy bears. Manufactured by various brands today, gummy worms come in a variety of options, ranging from sweet or sour to plain or sugar-coated, and even multi-flavored.

Some brands have introduced creative variations like glow worm gummies with sour sugar and vibrant colors. Classics like dirt pudding cups with gummy worms are popular, and you can add a playful twist with gummy worms in jello shots or soaked in your favorite alcoholic beverage. One popular gummy worm-inspired dessert is dirt and worms pudding, perfect for Halloween and fitting for National Gummy Worm Day.

Made with chocolate instant pudding, milk, crushed Oreos, and whipped topping, layered in cups and topped with gummy worms, it's a fun and delicious way to celebrate these charming, squiggly, and flavorful gummy delights that bring joy to candy enthusiasts of all ages.
