The story

National Macadamia Nut Day celebrates the unique and delicious macadamia nut, originating from the rainforests of northeast Australia. Renowned for their creamy, buttery taste, macadamias have a rich history spanning over 1,000 years. Although not true nuts botanically, they are commonly referred to as such in the culinary world, emphasizing their distinctiveness. The macadamia tree, native to Australia with four distinct species, was discovered by Aboriginal peoples, who integrated the nuts into ceremonies and trade over a millennium ago. In 1828, Scottish botanist Allan Cunningham encountered these trees, and in 1857, European botanists Walter Hill and Baron Ferdinand von Mueller named the nut after their friend, John Macadam, a Scottish-Australian chemist and politician. Macadamia nuts were introduced to Hawaii in 1882, with the first commercial orchards established in 1921 to protect sugar cane fields. Today, they are grown globally, notably in Hawaii, Indonesia, South Africa, and California. Enjoyed raw or roasted, macadamias feature prominently in baked goods, such as white chocolate macadamia nut cookies.
