The story

Spumoni, originating in 19th-century Naples, Italy, became a cherished dessert brought to the United States by Italian immigrants in the late 1800s. Its name, derived from the Italian word “spuma” meaning “foam,” reflects its light and airy quality. What distinguishes spumoni is its composition – three layers of ice cream, traditionally chocolate or vanilla, pistachio, and cherry, interwoven with layers of nuts and candied fruits, providing a delightful crunch and burst of sweetness. Respectful of tradition, spumoni is meant to be sliced, not scooped, showcasing its intricate layers and flavors. Although it may visually resemble Neapolitan ice cream, spumoni stands apart with its unique additions of nuts, candied fruits, and whipped cream. Originally featuring almond, semisweet chocolate, and stracciatella layers, spumoni in the U.S. has evolved to highlight cherry, pistachio, and chocolate flavors. Over time, additional variations emerged, incorporating hazelnut, vanilla, strawberry, and pineapple. Despite its transformation, spumoni's essence lies in its rich history, intricate layers, and the tantalizing combination of textures and tastes.
