Meze Day

The story
Meze is the Turkish art of beginning a meal with many small plates—bright, creamy, spicy, pickled, and herbed—meant for sharing rather than rushing toward a main course. Bowls of haydari and cacık, spicy ezme, olives, stuffed vegetables, roasted eggplant, and seasonal salads arrive together so every guest can build a personal rhythm of bites. Bread becomes a utensil; conversation becomes the point. Around tables from Istanbul meyhanes to Aegean homes, Meze turns eating into a collective slow dance.
The tradition links Türkiye to a wider Mediterranean and Levantine table culture while remaining distinctly Turkish in its yogurt dips, pepper pastes, and olive-oil vegetables. Meze welcomes both meat eaters and vegetarians, feast days and ordinary weeknights, because abundance here is measured in variety and hospitality more than in a single grand roast. Opening Türk Mutfağı Haftası with Meze makes sense: it is cuisine as welcome.
On Meze Day, set out at least five small dishes, pour cold drinks, and refuse to clear the table too soon. Invite friends to bring one plate each and taste everything slowly. Celebrating Meze is celebrating the Turkish shared table at its most colorful and generous.
