Hummus Day
May 13 every year
The story
Hummus is the shared bowl at the heart of Israeli dining: chickpeas blended with tahini, lemon, garlic, and salt until silky, then swirled with a well of olive oil, paprika or cumin, and whole chickpeas. Eaten with warm pita, it is breakfast, lunch, mezze, and late-night fuel. Great hummus is smooth, balanced, and never pasty—tahini and lemon in conversation, not competition, with a finish of good oil.
Levantine kitchens perfected chickpea-tahini mash long before restaurant culture; in Israel, dedicated hummusiyot turned the dish into a national outing, with diners tearing pita toward the center of one plate. International Hummus Day falls on May 13; this calendar keeps that date with Israel-owned framing—the café table, the obsession with texture, the ritual of scooping together without individual bowls.
On Hummus Day, blend warm chickpeas with excellent tahini, plate a wide swirl, and pour olive oil into the well. Invite friends to one bowl. Celebrating hummus is celebrating Israel's most generous everyday food on its global day, local style.
