Okonomiyaki Day
October 10 every year
The story
Okonomiyaki is Japan’s savory cabbage pancake cooked on a flat griddle and finished “as you like”—the meaning behind its name. A batter of flour, egg, and shredded cabbage takes pork, seafood, or cheese, then receives a gloss of okonomiyaki sauce, mayonnaise, aonori, and feathery bonito flakes. Osaka-style mixes ingredients into one round cake; Hiroshima-style stacks noodles and layers with dramatic height. Okonomiyaki Day on October 10 celebrates the sizzle of the griddle and the joy of customizing every plate.
Born from thrifty home cooking and popularized in postwar city life, okonomiyaki became a communal restaurant experience where diners watch their meal take shape. The toppings make it festive; the cabbage keeps it comforting. Families argue gently over sauce brands and mayo swirls.
On Okonomiyaki Day, heat a griddle, mix cabbage into batter, and cook a round for the table. Visit an okonomiyaki restaurant, or host a toppings night with friends. Celebrating okonomiyaki is celebrating Japan’s most customizable, sauce-glossed comfort pancake.
