National Eat A Peach Day

The story

Peaches, with roots tracing back to ancient China, were first domesticated along the Yangzi River around 6000 BC, symbolizing vitality and protection against evil spirits in Chinese culture. In the United States, August 22nd is dedicated to celebrating peaches, coinciding with their typical harvest period between June and August. Beyond their sweet and juicy taste, peaches offer numerous health benefits, being rich in vitamins A, C, and E, as well as essential minerals like potassium, iron, and calcium.

Native to Northwest China, peaches made their way to Europe through Persia and arrived in North America in the 16th century via Spanish explorers. The first peach tree in North America was planted in Virginia in the 17th century, and commercial cultivation in the United States began in the 18th century, with Georgia earning the title of the “Peach State.” It's fascinating to note that peaches are closely related to nectarines, belonging to the same species, with the distinction being the presence or absence of fuzz on their skin, a trait selectively bred by nectarine farmers.
