The story

National Fruitcake Day, tracing its roots to ancient Rome over 2,000 years ago, celebrates a timeless holiday tradition. This delectable confection, crafted with chopped candied or dried fruit, nuts, and spices, often soaked in spirits, has a rich history. Dating back to Rome, the earliest recipe included pomegranate seeds, pine nuts, and raisins in a barley mash. Throughout the Middle Ages, honey, spices, and preserved fruits were added. In the 16th century, abundant sugar from the American Colonies led to excess candied fruit, making fruitcakes affordable and popular. In the U.S., mail-order fruitcakes debuted in 1913, coinciding with the expression “nutty as a fruitcake” in 1935. Charities embraced them for fundraising. The 1969 Apollo 11 mission even took a pineapple fruitcake to space, now at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. Fruitcakes, with some versions maturing for 25 years, have an enduring appeal. National Fruitcake Day invites global celebration, bridging borders with diverse variations. German Stollen features butter, yeast, flour, water, almonds, raisins, and spices, while the British counterpart boasts marzipan and royal icing.
