The story

Hamburger’s origin traces back to the domestication of cattle in Mesopotamia around 10,000 years ago. Hamburg, Germany, renowned for high-quality beef in the 12th century, introduced a ”Hamburg-style“ chopped steak to the United States in 1848 through German immigrants escaping political turmoil. In the mid-19th century, Dr. James H. Salisbury's recommendation of cooked beef patties coincided with the availability of American Choppers, facilitating the hamburger's evolution. The late 19th century witnessed the transition of the hamburger from plate to bun, with disputed claims about its birthplace. However, it gained national attention at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. Upton Sinclair's 1906 exposé, ”The Jungle,“ sheds light on the meatpacking industry, but the opening of the first White Castle in 1921 by Edgar ”Billy“ Ingram and Walter Anderson revolutionizes the perception of hamburger meat, emphasizing cleanliness. White Castle's success paves the way for iconic national chains like McDonald's (1948), Burger King (1954), and Wendy's (1969). McDonald's global expansion and the influence of American armed services during World War II turn the hamburger into a global phenomenon. The burger's rise to fame after the 1904 World's Fair and contributions from individuals like Fletcher Davis and Walter Anderson solidify its place in global cuisine.

National Hamburger Day, celebrated today, transcends culinary boundaries. The hamburger's evolution includes variations like Turkey Burgers, Buffalo Burgers, Chicken Burgers, and Emu Burgers.
