The story

National Mead Day celebrates the ancient craft of mead-making, also known as honey wine, nectar, or ambrosia. Mead, a versatile beverage with roots dating back 20,000-40,000 years to Africa, is created by blending honey, water, and yeast. Its accidental discovery occurred when wild bees nested in tree crowns, producing a natural fermentation of water, honey, and yeast. With its origins tied to Africa, mead-making knowledge spread globally as civilizations added unique touches. Mead holds historical significance, appearing in mythologies and sacred ceremonies. In Norse mythology, the Poetic Mead bestowed poetic prowess on those who consumed it. Mead's historical journey spans continents and time, from ancient Chinese pottery fragments to mentions in Hinduism's Rigveda and the Welsh “Song of Mead.” The Vikings, renowned beekeepers, had a penchant for mead, producing both royal honey mead and a more affordable version. While mead's popularity waned in the 1600s, it left a lasting legacy, influencing traditions like the “honeymoon.” Today, mead experiences a resurgence, with meaderies proliferating, medieval festivals featuring the drink, and the market growing rapidly. National Mead Day, initiated in 2002, promotes awareness through tastings, workshops, fairs, and festivals, showcasing mead's diverse styles and flavors.
