The story

National Nut Day, celebrated in the United States and gaining popularity in the UK, pays homage to the health benefits and versatility of nuts. The celebration traces its roots back to ancient times, around 780,000 years ago, when nuts were a fundamental part of the human diet, evidenced by the use of ”nutting stones“ by our ancestors. Ancient civilizations, including the Greeks, Romans, and biblical societies, recognized the significance of nuts, with almonds, pistachios, and walnuts playing essential roles. In the 18th century, walnuts traveled to the New World, brought to California by Franciscan monks, while chestnuts gained popularity in Europe. The Liberation Foods Company established National Nut Day in 2015, not only to celebrate the rich history of nuts but also to promote fair trade practices and sustainable growth for small nut farmers worldwide. The celebration highlights the diverse array of nuts, from familiar favorites like walnuts, hazelnuts, and cashews to exotic options like kola nuts and pine nuts.
