Amalfi Lemon Day

The story

Amalfi lemons are the oversized, fragrant citrus of the Campania coast, thick-skinned and intensely aromatic, grown on terraces that tumble toward the sea. Their juice is bright and their zest oily with perfume, making them prized for salads, fish, pastries, and the liqueurs of the region. Gardeners train trees on pergolas along steep slopes, a landscape as famous as the fruit itself. In markets, Amalfi lemons look almost too large to be real—bumpy, sunny, and smelling of summer even before you cut them.

The lemon is a southern Italian emblem of hospitality and light. Cooks use the zest in cakes and the juice on grilled fish; hosts set bowls of whole fruit on tables as decoration and promise. On Amalfi Lemon Day, buy the freshest lemons you can find, grate zest into pasta with oil and chili, squeeze juice over seafood or salad, or bake a simple lemon cake.

Make lemonade, candy the peels, or simply inhale a freshly cut fruit. Celebrating Amalfi lemons is celebrating the Mediterranean sun concentrated in one golden sphere.
