The story

Chocolate, with roots tracing back over 4,000 years to the ancient Maya civilization, has a rich history that has evolved over time. The Olmecs, predecessors to the Maya, were likely the first to turn the cacao plant into a bitter beverage. The Maya, infatuated with chocolate, incorporated it into rituals, creating a frothy concoction with roasted cacao seeds, chili peppers, water, and cornmeal, celebrating it as the drink of the gods. The Aztecs elevated chocolate's status, using cacao beans as currency and attributing its introduction to the god Quetzalcoatl. Their ruler, Montezuma II, consumed chocolate for strength and aphrodisiac effects. Hernan Cortes introduced cacao to Europe in the 16th century, gaining popularity as a beverage sweetened with sugar and honey. The chocolate journey in Europe saw innovative variations, and the 19th-century chocolate revolution occurred with the invention of the chocolate press, enabling mass production of cocoa powder. In 1847, the first chocolate bar was created, and the addition of dried milk powder in 1876 led to milk chocolate. Iconic chocolate companies like Cadbury, Mars, and Hershey emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, mass-producing a variety of confections. National Chocolate Day celebrates chocolate's history, encouraging indulgence in various forms, from bars to truffles. However, as chocolate gained global popularity, ethical concerns arose, leading to calls for fair-trade practices due to issues like child labor and environmental impact in the contemporary chocolate industry.
