The story
In the early 19th century, chocolate was a beverage rather than a solid treat, consumed without the sweetness we associate with it today. But in 1765, an unlikely partnership between a doctor and a chocolate maker gave birth to the chocolate cake.
They ground cocoa beans into a thick syrup and poured it into cake-shaped molds meant for beverages, and the concept of the chocolate cake was born.
It wasn't until 1847 that the first documented chocolate cake recipe appeared in Eliza Leslie's cookbook. This early version featured chopped pieces of chocolate inserted into a plain sponge, offering tantalizing bursts of melted chocolate.
Over time, culinary pioneers like Maria Parloa added frosting and de-fatted cocoa powder to the mix, evolving the chocolate cake into what we recognize today.
Fast forward to the 1920s, when O. Duff and Sons introduced the first boxed chocolate cake, making it accessible to everyone. Betty Crocker took it a step further in 1947 with ready-to-bake cake mixes, making chocolate cake preparation even more straightforward.
As the 20th century progressed, chocolate cake became an integral part of our culture, leading to the creation of National Chocolate Cake Day.
