The story

Chocolate and mint have been on separate journeys for centuries. The Aztecs and Mayans drank chocolate as a bitter beverage, while mint was a medicinal herb, often brewed with spices like cinnamon. When chocolate reached Europe, it was sweetened and transformed into candy. By the 19th century, someone had the brilliant idea to pair it with mint.

Fast forward to the 1940s, and the York Peppermint Pattie burst onto the scene. Created by Henry Kessler’s York Cone Company, this crisp, refreshing treat became a legend. Today, York Peppermint Patties—now made by Hershey—remain a hallmark of mint-chocolate perfection.

But York wasn’t first. In the early 1900s, Huyler’s in New York was already mass-producing chocolate mint candies, helping cement the combo as a classic. Then came the Girl Scouts in the 1950s with their famous Thin Mints, a cookie that still sells millions every year.

Now, mint chocolate is everywhere—ice cream, cookies, hot chocolate, and candies. Whether it’s the iconic Andes Mints, a scoop of mint chocolate chip, or a decadent crème de menthe dessert, this pairing has earned its place in our hearts (though not everyone is a fan).
