The story

The very people telling us to avoid sugar gave us one of the sweetest joys of life. Cotton candy’s histroy dates back to over 120 years! In 1897, William Morrison, a dentist, teamed up with John C. Wharton, a confectioner, to invent a machine that transformed sugar into airy strands of delight. They unveiled their creation—called “Fairy Floss” —to the public at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, where it was a massive hit. Over 68,000 boxes were sold at 25 cents each (a luxury back then), introducing millions to this magical dessert. After its debut, Fairy Floss remained the name until the 1920s, when another dentist, Joseph Lascaux, rebranded it as cotton candy, inspired by its resemblance to fluffy cotton fibers. The new name stuck, and by the mid-20th century, “cotton candy” became the universal term, though places like Australia still call it Fairy Floss. While Morrison and Wharton’s original machine was revolutionary, it had its quirks—loud, shaky, and prone to breaking. In 1949, Ohio’s Gold Medal Products introduced a spring-loaded base that stabilized production, making the machines more reliable and efficient. By the 1970s, automation took over, allowing cotton candy to be spun, bagged, and shipped worldwide. T oday, from countertop gadgets to industrial machines, cotton candy has become a global phenomenon. The earliest cotton candy was plain white, but the classic pink vanilla and blue raspberry we know today became staples in the mid-20th century. Over the years, flavors have exploded—from green dill pickle to bright purple gingerbread. Modern innovations have even turned cotton candy into mashups like burritos, pancakes, and yes, pizza!
