The story

National Daiquiri Day celebrates the daiquiri, a rum-based cocktail that originated in a Cuban mining village named Daiquiri during the Spanish-American War in 1898. American mining engineer Jennings Cox, managing operations in Daiquiri, mixed Bacardi rum, lime, and sugar over cracked ice in the local Venus bar. This refreshing concoction, named after the Daiquiri mines, became the daiquiri's precursor. Variations of the original recipe emerged, incorporating lemons, limes, or both, and shaved ice. In 1909, U.S. Navy medical officer Admiral Lucius W. Johnson introduced the daiquiri to the Army and Navy Club in Washington, D.C., after discovering Cox's creation in Cuba. This marked the daiquiri's introduction to the United States and the beginning of its popularity. The daiquiri gained iconic status, enjoyed by notable figures like writer Ernest Hemingway and President John F. Kennedy. Hemingway's fondness for the daiquiri contributed to its international acclaim.
