The cocktail's origins are mysterious, with legend attributing its creation to mixologist Donato ”Duke“ Antone in 1952 at his Blackwatch Bar in Hollywood. In the late 1960s, the cocktail's popularity soared due to a strategic marketing campaign by George Bednar, McKesson Imports Company's marketing director, the U.S. importer of Galliano. Bednar collaborated with artist Bill Young to create Harvey Wallbanger, a laid-back surfer featured in advertisements. This successful marketing led to a surge in Galliano sales, making it the top imported liqueur in America. The cocktail recipe involves six parts fresh orange juice, three parts vodka, and one part Galliano, mixed in a highball glass filled with ice.
