National Pecan Pie Day

The story

The origins of pecan pie in America can be traced back to Native Americans who incorporated pecans into their cuisine, eventually leading to the creation of pecan pies. The precise origin of pecan pie is debated, with claims attributing it to French settlers in New Orleans in the 1700s or early roots in Alabama in the 1800s, though there is no conclusive evidence. The first documented pecan pie recipe emerged in 1886 in “Harper's Bazaar” magazine.

Its popularity grew in the following decades, with appearances in well-known cookbooks such as “Joy of Cooking” and “Fannie Farmer.” Pecan pie gained widespread recognition in the 1930s when Karo corn syrup, a key ingredient, started promoting the recipe on its labels. Despite being associated with Southern cuisine, pecan pie has become a national favorite, featured prominently on Thanksgiving tables alongside other pies.

The classic recipe includes pecans, eggs, sugar, butter, vanilla extract, and sweeteners like corn syrup. While regional variations may introduce ingredients like bourbon, whiskey, coconut, or chocolate, the simple and sweet nature of pecan pie remains a cherished part of fall and winter celebrations across the United States.
