National Popcorn Day

The story

Originating from Old English, the term 'corn' initially referred to the primary grain of a region. When Native Americans introduced maize, a specific corn variety, to early Europeans, the meaning of 'corn' transformed. In the 16th century, the Aztecs incorporated popcorn into ceremonies, captivating early Spanish explorers.

Popcorn gained momentum in the mid-1800s in the U.S., but Charles Cretors' steam-powered machine in 1900 made it widely accessible.

Louise Ruckheim's addition of peanuts and molasses birthed Cracker Jack, forever linked with baseball. The slow integration of popcorn into movies saw a turning point when Glen W. Dickson introduced popcorn machines.

The 20th-century microwave oven marked another milestone. National Popcorn Day's history unveils the distinct maize varieties used for eating and popping. The unique Zea mays everta, discovered in the Bat Cave of New Mexico, dates back thousands of years.

From Aztec ceremonies to Native American daily life, popcorn's rich history includes French explorers observing the Iroquois Natives making popcorn. Today, Americans consume 13 billion quarts annually, making it the world's most consumed. Nebraska's leadership in popcorn production underscores the U.
