The story
Raspberries have been cherished since ancient times, with our Paleolithic ancestors plucking them from bushes for a sweet treat. It wasn't until the 4th century B.C. that raspberries began to be cultivated. These sweet and versatile berries found their way into herbal teas and medicinal sachets, and evidence of their cultivation can be traced back to Rome. Medieval Europe embraced raspberries in various ways, using them for medicine and even as pigments in paintings and manuscripts. Back then, only the upper class could afford these delicacies. By the 17th century, raspberries were flourishing in British gardens, and their cultivation spread across Europe. When European settlers set foot in America, they discovered that Native Americans had already been enjoying these berries for centuries. The cultivated version was introduced to the United States, and soon, commercial raspberry plants were in high demand all over the country. By the 19th century, raspberries were being cultivated in many major states, with approximately 2,000 acres of land dedicated to their growth by 1880. Raspberries have even woven their way into myths. One legend tells of a nymph named Ida who pricked her finger while picking raspberries, turning them from white to red. Another German myth attributes a fox's red coat to its consumption of raspberries. Though the origins of National Raspberry Cake Day remain shrouded in mystery, we're grateful to whoever first combined the luscious raspberry with cake, and we celebrate their delectable idea by indulging in a slice of raspberry cake.
