National Vodka Day

The story

The mysterious origins of vodka, possibly dating back to the 8th or 9th century in present-day Poland or Russia, have paved the way for its global dominance, constituting almost 25% of spirits consumed in the United States. National Vodka Day, an annual celebration on October 4 since at least 2009, has become a marketing phenomenon, recognized by notable sources like Wine Enthusiast magazine and CBS. The term ”vodka,“ rooted in the Slavic word for 'little water,' emerged in the Middle Ages, with its modern evolution involving distillation by monks in Russia and Poland.

The word ”vodka“ appeared in Russia in the late 14th century, introduced by Genoese ambassadors in 1386. Despite its Russian and Polish origins, vodka is now a global spirit, featuring a minimum Alcohol by Volume (ABV) of 40% since the 1890s. Vodka's popularity surged post-World War II, reaching North America by the 1930s.

It became a mainstream favorite, showcased in cocktails like the Moscow Mule and the Cosmopolitan. Absolut's introduction of flavored vodka in 1986 sparked a trend, leading to an array of creative mixology possibilities. Beyond cocktails, vodka's versatility extends to cooking, cleaning, and even preserving flowers, solidifying its timeless presence in various aspects of life.
